The Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad was incorporated in 1882 and operated as part of the Illinois Central Railroad system on standard gauge track running from Jackson, Mississippi through Yazoo City and the Mississippi Delta north to Memphis, Tennessee, and on to New Orleans, Louisiana. The Illinois Central began absorbing its subsidiaries in 1945, and the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad ceased to operate as an independent company in 1946 after 64 years.
