Louisville and Nashville Railroad

The Louisville and Nashville Railroad was a Class I railroad chartered by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1850 to carry freight and passengers through the southeastern United States, operating continuously under one name for 132 years from headquarters that moved from Louisville, Kentucky, to Jacksonville, Florida, in 1980. The Seaboard Coast Line Railroad purchased the remaining shares it did not already own in 1971, making the L&N a subsidiary, and by 1982 the Seaboard Coast Line had absorbed the company entirely; its lines eventually became part of CSX Transportation in 1986 following further mergers.
