Potteries, Shrewsbury and North Wales Railway

The Potteries, Shrewsbury and North Wales Railway, informally known as the Potts, was a railway company formed under an 1866 act that consolidated the Shrewsbury and North Wales Railway with the Shrewsbury and Potteries Junction Railway, connecting Shrewsbury, England to quarries at Nantmawr and Criggion. Opened in 1866 at a cost of about 1.5 million pounds, the line suffered severe financial difficulties and poor maintenance, and the Board of Trade forced its closure in June 1880 for safety reasons; after lying dormant for three decades it was revived as a light railway in 1911 under the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire Light Railway and operated until 1960.
