Oswestry and Newtown Railway

The Oswestry and Newtown Railway was a British railway company authorized by the Oswestry, Welchpool and Newtown Railway Act 1855, built to connect Oswestry in Shropshire with Newtown in Montgomeryshire and opened in stages during 1860 and 1861. Formed to bring rail transport to a region the major trunk railway companies had neglected, it survived its early years through contractors Davies and Savin accepting shares as payment for construction, before merging with other local railway concerns in 1863 to form the Cambrian Railways; the line suffered a head on collision near Abermule in 1921 that killed seventeen people, and most of it closed following nationalization between the 1950s and 1960s, though the Buttington to Newtown section remains part of the operating Aberystwyth passenger route.
