The London and North Eastern Railway, known as the LNER, was the second largest of the Big Four railway companies created by the Railways Act 1921 in Britain, and it operated from January 1, 1923 until nationalisation on January 1, 1948. At nationalisation it was divided into British Railways' Eastern Region and North Eastern Region, with part of its network going into the Scottish Region.
