City and South London Railway

The City and South London Railway (C&SLR) was the first successful deep-level underground tube railway in the world and the first major railway to use electric traction, opening to the public on December 18, 1890, after an official opening on November 4, 1890. It proved that underground railways could be built at significant depth without disrupting the surface above, a demonstration that enabled the later growth of London's wider underground network. The company was liquidated on July 1, 1933, when the London Passenger Transport Board was created to take over the Underground Group and other London transport services, and its tunnels and stations today form part of the London Underground's Northern line.
