Midland Counties Railway

The Midland Counties Railway was an early British railway company that existed from 1839 to 1844, connecting Nottingham, Leicester and Derby with Rugby and, via the London and Birmingham Railway, with London, at a construction cost of just under 1.4 million pounds. In 1844 it merged with the North Midland Railway and the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway to form the Midland Railway, and much of its original Nottingham-Derby-Leicester line remains in use today as part of the Midland Main Line, though its Leicester-to-Rugby section closed in 1961.
