Western Switzerland Railways began as a joint operation of three separate Swiss railway companies before those companies merged into a single company on 1 January 1872. The merged company was renamed Western Switzerland-Simplon Railways on 28 June 1881, and it in turn merged with the Bernese Jura Railways to form the Jura-Simplon Railways on 1 January 1890.
