SNCF, formally Societe Nationale des Chemins de fer Francais, is France's national railway company, headquartered near Paris and wholly owned by the French state. It was created in 1938 by merging France's five major private railway companies with the state's own rail interests, and it operates France's passenger and freight rail network today, including the TGV high-speed rail service that SNCF launched in 1981 and has since extended across much of the country and into neighboring nations.
