Eagle Brewery (Davenport, Iowa)

Eagle Brewery was a brewery at 1235 West 5th Street in Davenport, Iowa, begun before the Civil War by Peter Littig and known by 1870 as Littig Brothers. German immigrants George Mengel and Henry Klindt bought the business in 1876, after which it traded for a time as Mengel and Klindt before taking the name Eagle Brewery. Its surviving building, erected around 1865, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. In 1894 the brewery joined four other Davenport breweries in a consolidation that formed the Davenport Malting Company, and by 1916 output had grown to about 75,000 barrels a year, making it the second largest brewery in Iowa at the time. Production ended in 1916 with the start of national Prohibition, and the building was later used by other industry, including the Davenport Pearl Button Company in the early twentieth century.
