Anchor Brewing Company was founded in 1896 by Ernst F. Baruth and Otto Schinkel Jr. in San Francisco, California, becoming known for a trademarked steam beer style and, after Frederick Louis Fritz Maytag III bought the failing brewery in 1965, for helping inspire the American craft brewing movement from its Potrero Hill home since 1979. Ownership passed to former Skyy vodka executives in 2010 and then to Japan's Sapporo for 85 million dollars in 2017, but declining sales attributed to pandemic-era bar and restaurant closures and shifting consumer tastes led the company to announce it would cease operations and liquidate on July 12, 2023. In May 2024 Chobani founder and CEO Hamdi Ulukaya purchased Anchor intending to restart production in San Francisco, and by February 2025 the new ownership had secured the necessary alcoholic beverage permits, though full production had not yet resumed.
