Zabar's

Zabar's is a well-known appetizing store and delicatessen at Broadway and 80th Street on Manhattan's Upper West Side in New York City, specializing in bagels, smoked fish, olives and cheeses. It was founded in 1934 by Louis and Lillian Zabar; Louis, born Mordko Leib Zabarka, had emigrated from Ukraine in the early 1920s and worked a Brooklyn farmer's market stall before opening the original store. Under Louis's leadership the business grew to ten Manhattan markets by 1950, and after his death that year the family-run store continued to expand, undergoing a major relocation and enlargement in the 1970s that made it one of the largest food markets in Manhattan. Zabar's is credited with helping popularize drip coffee makers in the United States in the late 1960s and remains a fixture of New York City food culture.
