Woolworths Group Limited is an Australian multinational retail and financial services company headquartered in Bella Vista, New South Wales, founded on 22 September 1924 by five partners, Percy Christmas, Stanley Chatterton, Cecil Scott Waine, George Creed and Ernest Williams, who opened the Woolworths Stupendous Bargain Basement in Sydney's Imperial Arcade. The name was adopted after a dare referencing the unrelated American F.W. Woolworth chain, once founder Ernest Williams confirmed it was available to register in New South Wales. As of 2025 the company operates 1,824 stores across Australia and New Zealand, employs about 202,846 people, and generates annual revenue of 69.077 billion Australian dollars.
