Vodacom Group Limited is South Africa's largest mobile network operator, headquartered in Midrand near Johannesburg, founded in 1993 as a joint venture that grew to become majority owned by the UK's Vodafone Group, which continues to hold a controlling stake alongside public shareholders on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Vodacom launched South Africa's first GSM network and has since expanded into fixed broadband, enterprise IT and financial services, and it operates mobile networks in several other African markets including Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Lesotho and, through a later acquisition, Egypt. The company has been a significant player in African mobile money services, building on the M-Pesa platform developed with its Vodafone affiliate Safaricom in Kenya.
