Viettel Group is Vietnam's largest telecommunications operator, headquartered in Hanoi and owned by Vietnam's Ministry of National Defence, having originated in 1989 as a military-run construction and communications enterprise before entering commercial telecom services and becoming the country's dominant mobile carrier. Viettel has pursued an unusually aggressive international expansion for a Vietnamese state enterprise, building or acquiring mobile networks under local brand names across Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America, including Movitel in Mozambique, Halotel in Tanzania, Metfone in Cambodia, Unitel in Laos and Natcom in Haiti, making it one of the largest telecom groups by combined footprint originating from a single Southeast Asian country. Domestically it also provides fixed broadband, enterprise IT and digital services.
