Toyota Australia is the Australian subsidiary of Toyota, based in Port Melbourne, which markets Toyota products and manages motorsport, advertising and business operations in Australia and is also responsible for Lexus vehicles there. It manufactured cars locally from 1963 until 2017. It began in 1959 by importing Land Cruisers for the Snowy Mountains Scheme, and Australian Motor Industries started assembling Toyotas in Port Melbourne in 1963, beginning with the Tiara. Toyota later built an engine plant at Altona, opened in 1978, and made cars locally until 2017.
