Tokio Marine Holdings is a Japanese insurance holding company headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, tracing its origin to Tokio Marine Insurance, founded in 1879 and generally regarded as Japan's oldest insurance company. It took its present name in 2008, having previously been known as Millea Holdings, and is the parent of the Tokio Marine Group, the largest property and casualty insurance group in Japan by revenue, employing roughly 39,000 people across 38 countries. Its international growth has been built substantially around acquisitions of specialty insurers in the United States, including Philadelphia Consolidated, Delphi Financial, Tokio Marine HCC and Privilege Underwriters Reciprocal Exchange, and the group has more recently formed a capital alliance with Berkshire Hathaway.
