Target Corporation

Target Corporation is an American general merchandise retail corporation headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, one of the largest discount retail chains in the United States. Its history traces to the Dayton Dry Goods Company, founded in Minneapolis in 1902, which later became the Dayton Company and then Dayton-Hudson Corporation after merging with the J.L. Hudson Company, and the company opened its first Target discount store in the Minneapolis suburb of Roseville in 1962 as a lower-priced, higher-volume alternative to its traditional department stores. The parent company renamed itself Target Corporation in 2000 after selling off its remaining traditional department store chains, and Target today operates as a large-format discount retailer selling clothing, home goods, groceries, and general merchandise.
