STMicroelectronics N.V., commonly known as ST, is a Franco-Italian semiconductor company legally domiciled in the Netherlands with operational headquarters split between Geneva and Paris, one of the largest chipmakers in Europe. It was formed in 1987 through the merger of the Italian state-owned SGS Microelettronica and the French Thomson Semiconducteurs, combining two national semiconductor champions into a single European company. STMicroelectronics designs and manufactures a broad range of chips including microcontrollers, power and sensor components used heavily in automotive electronics, industrial equipment and consumer devices, and it operates its own semiconductor fabrication plants across Europe and Asia. The company has been a significant supplier of sensor chips used in smartphones and other consumer electronics.
