State Street Corporation is an American financial services company headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, one of the world's largest custody banks and asset managers for institutional investors. Its history traces to 1792 and the founding of the Union Bank, one of the oldest continuously operating banks in the United States, which grew over the following two centuries into a major custodian of institutional investment assets. Through its asset management arm, State Street Global Advisors, the company created the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust in 1993, the first exchange-traded fund listed in the United States, and State Street today provides custody, accounting, and investment management services to pension funds, mutual funds, and other large institutional clients worldwide.
