State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company is the largest property and casualty insurance provider in the United States by market share. Retired farmer and insurance salesman George J. Mecherle founded it in 1922 in Bloomington, Illinois, originally to sell automobile insurance to farmers at lower rates than existing urban focused insurers charged, and it grew into a mutual company owned by its policyholders, offering auto, home, life and other lines of insurance.
