Starbucks Corporation is an American coffeehouse chain founded in Seattle in 1971 by Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker, originally a single store selling roasted coffee beans and equipment rather than brewed drinks. Howard Schultz joined the company in 1982, later bought it outright in 1987, and reshaped it around an Italian-style espresso bar experience, driving rapid expansion from the 1990s onward. It grew into the largest coffeehouse chain in the world by number of locations, operating tens of thousands of stores across dozens of countries.
