Soros Fund Management is a private investment firm in New York that runs a group of hedge funds known as the Quantum Group of Funds. George Soros started the Double Eagle Fund in 1969 while at Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder, then left in 1973 with his assistant Jim Rogers to found the firm itself. The fund was renamed the Quantum Fund in 1979 and posted exceptionally strong returns, rising 3,365 percent between 1969 and 1980. Soros later stepped back from daily trading, handing active management to outside managers and later to Stanley Druckenmiller, who ran the main fund from 1989. The cited history, written about 1999, reports gross assets of 21.5 billion dollars in 1998, more than any other hedge fund group at the time, and about 125 employees.
