Prudential Financial, Inc. is an American financial services company headquartered in Newark, New Jersey, one of the largest life insurers and asset managers in the United States. It was founded in 1875 by John Fairfield Dryden as the Prudential Friendly Society, initially selling low-cost industrial life insurance policies to working-class families, and it later adopted the Rock of Gibraltar as its emblem to signal financial strength. Prudential Financial today provides life insurance, annuities, and retirement products, and it manages a substantial asset management business through its PGIM subsidiary; it operates entirely separately from the similarly named Prudential plc of London, the two companies having split into fully independent businesses generations ago.
