Pennsylvania Railroad

The Pennsylvania Railroad, nicknamed the Pennsy, was an American Class I railroad established in 1846 and headquartered in Philadelphia. By 1882 it was the largest railroad in the world by traffic and revenue, eventually controlling at least 800 other rail lines and companies and operating over 11,600 miles of track by 1926, with the New York Central Railroad as its main rival. In 1968 the Pennsylvania Railroad merged with the New York Central to form the Penn Central Transportation Company, which failed within two years; its rail assets passed to Conrail in 1976 and were later divided between Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX Transportation.
