PayPal Holdings, Inc. is an American online payments company headquartered in San Jose, California, formed out of a late 1990s merger between the financial security firm Confinity and X.com, an online banking venture co-founded by Elon Musk. It operates a widely used online payment system letting individuals and businesses send and receive money electronically, was owned by eBay for over a decade, and became an independent public company again through a 2015 spin-off, growing into one of the largest digital payments companies in the world.
