Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, known as ONGC, is an Indian state-owned oil and gas company, India's largest crude oil and natural gas producer, with administrative headquarters in New Delhi and major operations centered in Dehradun. It was founded in 1956 as a directorate of the Government of India and later reorganized as a statutory commission and then a limited company, remaining majority owned by the Indian government. ONGC accounts for a large share of India's domestic crude oil and natural gas production, operating both onshore fields and major offshore assets such as the Bombay High field off the west coast of India. The company also holds international exploration interests through its subsidiary ONGC Videsh.
