NXP Semiconductors N.V. is a Dutch semiconductor company headquartered in Eindhoven, one of the largest suppliers of automotive semiconductors in the world. It began as the semiconductor division of the Dutch electronics company Philips, formally spun off as an independent company in 2006 and taking the NXP name, short for Next Experience. NXP designs and manufactures chips used heavily in automotive systems, including engine control, in-vehicle networking and secure car-access technology, alongside chips for mobile devices, industrial equipment and the broader Internet of Things. The company attempted a major merger with fellow chipmaker Qualcomm that was abandoned in 2018 after failing to secure Chinese regulatory approval, and it has continued to operate as an independent publicly traded company since.
