Nueva Montaña Quijano

Nueva Montaña Quijano S.A., often called NMQ and now known as Global Steel Wire S.A., is a Spanish steel company based in the Nueva Montaña neighbourhood of Santander in Cantabria. Its origins go back to 1873, when José Maria Quijano Fernández-Hontoria and Benigno Arce saw steel nail machinery at the Paris World's Fair and set up a factory in his family's flour mills, later known as Forjas de Buelna. In 1948 it merged with Altos Hornos de Nueva Montaña to take its present name. In the 1950s it built a neighbourhood for its workers at Camargo. From 1957 it made engines for tractors and parts for FASA-Renault, and when that work was ending it found a new partner in BMC, which led to the car maker Authi. The company was taken over by the Spanish government at one point, privatised in 1985, and in 1987 became part of the CELSA Group.
