Northern Counties Committee

The Northern Counties Committee was a railway company that served the north east of Ireland from 1903 to 1949. It was formed when the Midland Railway of England acquired the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway, and it continued to operate under a committee based in Belfast that kept day to day control despite its British parent ownership. The company ran both standard gauge and narrow gauge lines across Northern Ireland. In 1923 it passed into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway through the Railways Act grouping, and after nationalisation in 1948 it was briefly held by the British Transport Commission before being sold to the Ulster Transport Authority in 1949.
