Norsk Hydro ASA, commonly known as Hydro, is a Norwegian aluminum and renewable energy company headquartered in Oslo, one of the largest aluminum producers in the world. It was founded in 1905 as Norsk Hydro-Elektrisk Kvaelstofaktieselskab to manufacture nitrogen-based fertilizer using Norway's abundant hydroelectric power, and diversified over the following decades into oil and gas, light metals and other industrial activities before divesting most of its petroleum business into what became Norway's Equinor. Today Hydro is organized around aluminum production, from bauxite mining and alumina refining through smelting and recycling, alongside a hydroelectric power generation business. The Norwegian state remains Hydro's largest single shareholder.
