Norfolk Southern Corporation is an American Class I freight railroad holding company headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, formed in 1982 through the merger of the Norfolk and Western Railway and the Southern Railway. It operates a large freight rail network across the eastern and midwestern United States, hauling coal, intermodal containers, automobiles and general freight, and is one of the largest railroad companies in North America.
