Ninebot Inc. is a Beijing-headquartered Chinese maker of self-balancing two-wheeled scooters and other short-distance motorized transport devices. It is a private company registered in the Cayman Islands, founded and led by Lufeng Gao. In April 2015 it announced a strategic combination with Segway, the New Hampshire maker of the Segway personal transporter, under which Segway became a wholly-owned subsidiary while both brands kept operating under their own names. The purchase came only months after Segway had filed a patent complaint with the US International Trade Commission against Ninebot and other Chinese makers. Ninebot said it received an investment of 80 million dollars from the smartphone maker Xiaomi to finance the deal, and Wikipedia adds that Sequoia Capital also invested. The combined Segway-Ninebot portfolio now includes electric scooters, e-bikes, powersports vehicles and consumer robotics.
