The New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, widely known as the Nickel Plate Road, was a railroad company that operated across the American Midwest from 1881 to 1964. It was organized on February 3, 1881 by banker George I. Seney and associates to compete with William Vanderbilt's Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, and completed its 513-mile mainline between Buffalo and Chicago in about five hundred days. The company changed ownership several times, passing through Vanderbilt, the Van Sweringen brothers, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, before merging into the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1964.
