Netcom, formally NETCOM On-Line Communication Services Inc., was an internet service provider headquartered in San Jose, California, founded in 1988 by Bob Rieger and Bill Gitow. It began by offering dial-up shell accounts to students seeking off-campus access to university networks and grew into one of the world's largest ISPs, reporting about 500,000 subscribers by 1996 through its NetCruiser software and business and web-hosting services. ICG Communications acquired Netcom in 1997, and ICG sold its United States assets to MindSpring in 1999, after which the Netcom brand disappeared when MindSpring merged with EarthLink in 2000.
