Morgan Stanley is an American multinational investment bank headquartered in New York City, founded in 1935 by Henry Sturgis Morgan and Harold Stanley after the Glass-Steagall Act forced J.P. Morgan & Co. to separate its commercial and investment banking businesses. It grew into one of the largest investment banks in the world, providing investment banking, wealth management and institutional securities services, and significantly expanded its wealth management business through its 2009 combination with Citigroup's Smith Barney brokerage and its 2020 acquisitions of E*TRADE and Eaton Vance.
