Molson Brewery was founded in 1786 by John Molson, who had arrived in Canada in 1782 and acquired a brewery site on the St. Lawrence River near Montreal, making it one of the oldest breweries in North America. The Molson family retained significant influence into the twentieth century, including ownership stakes in the Montreal Canadiens NHL team acquired by Geoff and Andrew Molson in 2009, and the brewery merged with the Adolph Coors Company in 2005 to form Molson Coors Brewing Company, renamed Molson Coors Beverage Company in 2019. The original Montreal brewery, which had employed roughly 3,000 people producing brands including Molson Canadian, Molson Export and Coors Light, ceased operations in 2021 after more than two centuries of continuous production.
