Migros is Switzerland's largest retail company, largest supermarket chain and largest employer, and ranks among the forty largest retailers in the world. It was founded in 1925 by Gottlieb Duttweiler, who began selling basic goods at reduced prices from delivery trucks, and has since grown into a federation of cooperatives with more than two million members who are effectively part owners of the business. Headquartered in Zurich, Migros generated 32 billion Swiss francs in revenue in 2024; its name comes from the French mi (mid) and gros (wholesale), reflecting prices positioned between retail and wholesale, and its orange M logo has earned it the nickname the orange giant.
