American multinational technology company founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen on April 4, 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after the two demonstrated a BASIC interpreter for the Altair 8800 microcomputer. Microsoft relocated to the Pacific Northwest in 1986 and rose to dominance through a contract to supply IBM with an operating system for personal computers, followed by the Windows graphical interface and Office productivity suite.
