Megaupload Ltd was a Hong Kong based online company established in 2005 that operated until 2012, providing online services related to file storage and viewing. On 19 January 2012 the United States Department of Justice, through the Federal Bureau of Investigation, seized its domain names and closed its sites after its owners were arrested and indicted for allegedly running an organisation dedicated to copyright infringement. Assets worth about HK$330 million were then frozen by the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department. Its founder, Kim Dotcom, has denied wrongdoing and the case has been controversial. The service was relaunched on 19 January 2013 as Mega, under the domain mega.co.nz.
