Marks and Spencer plc is a major British multinational retailer headquartered in London that sells clothing, beauty products, home products and food, founded in 1884 by Michael Marks, a Polish Jewish immigrant, and Thomas Spencer, a cashier from Skipton, after Marks received a five pound loan from Isaac Jowitt Dewhirst to open his first penny bazaar at Leeds Kirkgate Market. The pair formally partnered in 1894. As of 2019 the company operated 1,463 locations worldwide, and for the year ending March 2026 it employed about 63,000 people and reported revenue of 17,273.6 million pounds and net income of 236.2 million pounds. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange as part of the FTSE 100.
