Marinship Corporation was a United States shipbuilding company created during World War II to build the cargo and tanker tonnage the war effort needed. The W. A. Bechtel Company built the yard in 1942 at Richardson's Bay in Marin County, at the north end of Sausalito, California, about three miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Laying of the first keel took place on 27 June 1942, only three months after construction began. In roughly three and a half years the yard launched 93 vessels, made up of 15 Liberty ships, 16 fleet oilers and 62 tankers, and at its peak employed about 20,000 workers. In June 1945 it delivered the tanker SS Huntington Hills in 33 days, a record. The yard was also the setting of the 1944 California Supreme Court case James v. Marinship, which barred a closed-shop union from excluding African American workers. The yard closed in 1946.
