Magnit is one of Russia's largest food retailers, founded in 1994 in Krasnodar by Sergey Galitsky and headquartered there, trading as a public joint-stock company on the Moscow Exchange and London Stock Exchange. The retailer operates convenience stores, hypermarkets, cosmetics outlets and family-format stores, and became Russia's largest retailer by sales in April 2013, a position that has since fluctuated against competitors such as X5 Group. As of March 2016 Magnit maintained 12,434 stores across 2,385 locations and employed more than 300,000 people.
