Lidl is a discount supermarket chain trademark operated by two entities, LD Stiftung and Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG, both under the German Schwarz Group. The business traces to 1930, when Josef Schwarz became a partner in a produce wholesaler named Lidl & Co, and the Lidl discount concept itself was launched by Dieter Schwarz in 1973 after he purchased rights to the name. As of 2023 Lidl operated about 12,200 stores across Europe and the United States, employed around 376,000 people, and generated 132.1 billion euros in revenue in 2024, making its parent Schwarz Group the fifth largest retailer in the world.
