Legoland Billund Resort, also known as Legoland Denmark, is the original Legoland theme park, opened on 7 June 1968 in Billund, Denmark, next to the original Lego factory and Billund Airport. The Blackstone Group acquired a 70 percent controlling stake in 2005 while Lego retained the remaining 30 percent, and the resort is operated day to day by Merlin Entertainments. Its centerpiece, Miniland, is built from more than 25 million plastic Lego bricks and recreates Danish landmarks and other famous structures at 1 to 20 scale, across 11 themed areas and roughly 50 attractions including four roller coasters and three water rides. More than 50 million guests have visited since it opened, and it remains the most visited attraction in Jutland and the largest tourist destination in Denmark outside Copenhagen.
