Konig Ludwig GmbH and Co. KG Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg is a Bavarian brewery in Furstenfeldbruck, Upper Bavaria, Germany, that began brewing in 1870 under the slogan Bier von koniglicher Hoheit, meaning beer of royal highness, reflecting its ties to Bavarian royal history. The brewery is owned by Prince Luitpold of the House of Wittelsbach, a great grandson of the last king of Bavaria, Ludwig III, and traces its lineage to signatories of the 1516 Bavarian purity law and to King Ludwig I, whose wedding celebration is credited with starting the first Oktoberfest. It expanded by acquiring the Marthabrau brewery in Furstenfeldbruck in 1980, where most administration and production now take place, entered a joint partnership with Warsteiner in 2001, and added facilities in Holzkirchen in 2007 and a joint venture with Postbrauerei in Thannhausen. As of 2004 the brewery produced about 340,000 hectoliters a year and licensed production internationally in the United Kingdom, Sweden, India, Indonesia and Croatia.
