KKR & Co. Inc. is an American private equity and alternative asset management firm headquartered in New York City, one of the pioneers of the leveraged buyout industry. It was founded in 1976 by Jerome Kohlberg Jr., Henry Kravis, and George Roberts, former colleagues at the investment bank Bear Stearns, and the firm became widely known for its 1988 leveraged buyout of RJR Nabisco, at the time the largest such deal in history and later chronicled in the book and film Barbarians at the Gate. KKR has since expanded well beyond private equity into real estate, credit, infrastructure, and insurance, and it manages capital across these strategies for institutional and, increasingly, individual investors.
