Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.A. is an Italian bank headquartered in Turin, the largest bank in Italy by total assets and domestic market share. It was formed in 2007 through the merger of Banca Intesa and Sanpaolo IMI, two of Italy's largest banking groups, each itself the product of earlier consolidations among older Italian regional banks. Intesa Sanpaolo operates the largest retail and commercial banking network in Italy, alongside significant insurance, asset management and investment banking businesses, and it has expanded into banking markets across Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The bank is considered one of the most systemically important financial institutions in the eurozone.
