Inpex Corporation is Japan's largest oil and natural gas exploration and production company, headquartered in Tokyo. It was formed in 2006 through the merger of International Petroleum Exploration Co., a Japanese state-backed oil exploration company founded in the 1960s, with Teikoku Oil, one of Japan's oldest domestic oil producers, bringing Japan's major upstream exploration interests under a single company. Inpex develops oil and gas fields across the world on behalf of Japan's energy security, and its flagship project is the Ichthys liquefied natural gas venture off the coast of Western Australia, one of the largest LNG developments ever built, which supplies gas to Japan and other Asian markets.
