In-N-Out Burger is a privately held American fast food chain founded in Baldwin Park, California in 1948 by Harry and Esther Snyder and still controlled by their granddaughter, Lynsi Snyder. Headquartered in Irvine, California, the chain has deliberately avoided franchising or going public, citing concerns about maintaining food quality and consistency during rapid expansion, and it operates 424 restaurants concentrated in California with expansion into neighboring states such as Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Texas and Oregon. In-N-Out has built a highly loyal customer following and has repeatedly ranked among the top rated fast food chains in customer satisfaction surveys, reporting revenue of about 1.8 billion dollars in fiscal year 2022.
